Why Employers Should Consider Sabbatical Leave Programs
Why Employers Should Consider Sabbatical Leave ProgramsWhy Employers Should Consider Sabbatical Leave ProgramsThe word sabbatical comes from the Old Testament practice of letting fields lie fallow every seven years. It was like a sabbath, a day off that lasted for an entire year. Companies that offer sabbatical leaves now, dont generally give you a year off to let your brain (your modern day fields) rest, but they do allow for more time off than youd get for a regular vacation. While United States law doesnt require any vacation time, most companies offer it, with people new to the workforce averaging 11 days per year, and move up to 17 or more after 10 years of experience. But, what if you got six weeks or more vacation, all in one lump? Thats what is known as a sabbatical leave. Who Offers Sabbatical Leave? Surprisingly, many companies in a wide variety of industries offer employees sabbatical leave during which they arent expected to even check their email. From restaurant Che esecake Factory to tech giant Intel, employees get the time off to do what they want to do. University and College professors often have the opportunity to take sabbatical leave. The nature of their work allows them to take a full semester off without disrupting their colleagues too much. Although, many professors on sabbatical leave are expected to do work related to their field. They just do not have to show up in the classroom. While that definitely offers a break of sorts, its not a full break. Who Benefits From Sabbatical Leave? Of course, the person who gets to take six weeks off in a row gets a lovely break, but David Burkus at The Harvard Business Review, found thatthe whole company benefitted from a leaders sabbatical leave. He found that the time away allowed people to generate new ideas for innovating in the organization and helped them gain greater confidence in themselves as leaders. That is a great thing, but the research found something else as well those who fille d in while the anfhrer was away on a sabbatical leave, gained a variety of skills while the boss was out. They often exceeded expectations, which helped the business in the long run. Because sabbatical leaves are so helpful for developing talent, companies should also start looking at the benefits of maternity and paternity leave, not just for the new parents, but for people who are allowed the opportunity to grow and stretch their skills. Just like with a sabbatical, you have plenty of notice before a baby comes. While the new parents arent getting the refreshing mind boost theyd receive on a true sabbatical leave, those who take over their duties are. Looking at parental leave as a benefit rather than a burden can also change how organizations approach it. What Should Your Sabbatical Leave Program Look Like? Each company has different needs, so there isnt a one size fits all solution for a sabbatical leave program. But think about the following issues as youre developing your policy. How long does an employee need to work before being eligible for a sabbatical leave? Many companies require five years or more. You most likely want to make it part of your retention strategy. Think about whether paid time off for such issues as parental leave or a long-term illness will continue to accrue time.Howlong does the employee have to take the sabbatical after gaining eligibility? To have an effective leave program, its better if the employee has time to prepare and plan. This is helpful to the company and the employee. How long do you give the employee before they lose the days? One year? Three? Many employers require the use of the sabbatical leave before the employee becomes eligible for the next sabbatical. How often are your employees able to take a sabbatical leave? Every five years, every ten years? Do you want to make them recurring? Are all employees eligible, or only people in certain roles? Is this a perk for executives only, or are administrative assista nts eligible as well? Keep in mind that you may experience benefits for people at all levels of your organization. But if a sabbatical leave is limited to a certain set of people, does the clock towards eligibility start when they enter a sabbatical leave-eligible position, or when they were hired? Does the employee have to repay her sabbatical salary if she doesnt come back to work after thesabbatical leave? What if she leaves within six months? Do you want to require partial repayment? The sabbatical leave is a bonus to the employee, but it needs to serve the business as well. No business benefit exists in a situation where you give an employee six weeks off work with no obligation to come back. (For example, many tuition assistance programs have a length of employment requirement contingency.) Will your sabbatical leave count toward the employees years of service and when you determine employee seniority and eligibility for salary increases. Is the sabbatical leave provided at ful l pay or partial pay? If the latter, how much? Keep in mind that without a paycheck, very few people will take advantage of this perk. Sabbatical leave is an excellent way to give employees a break and a reward for their hard work and years of service. Just like farm fields that need a rest, employee brains do need some time to relax as well. A sabbatical leave may serve as your answer about how you can support employee rest. However, if a sabbatical leave program wont work well for your company, you may wish to re-evaluate your vacation policy to ensure that your employees do get smaller breaks. Its great for everyone when employees have some time away.

Being a Rifleman in the USMC Marine Corps 0311 Being a Rifleman in the USMC Marine Corps 0311 Every Marine is a Rifleman has been the mantra of the United States Marine Corps since there have been Marines fighting wars. Why So Many Lawyers Quit the Profession
Why So Many Lawyers Quit the Profession Why So Many Lawyers Quit the Profession For non-lawyers, itâs crazy to think about how many lawyers leave the profession every year. You suffered through (and paid for) three years of law school, passed the bar exam, and now youâre walking away from life as a lawyer? But most lawyers have probably considered leaving, even if they ultimately decided to stay. So, whatâs going on? Why do lawyers leave the profession? There are many reasons, but here are some popular ones. The Hours Letâs face it, lawyers work a lot. Whether itâs demanding clients, hard deadline in court, pushy partners in a law firm, or just a commitment to the work, a law job is rarely a 9-5 endeavor. After years of missed dinner dates and canceled vacations, the hourly toll of being a lawyer can start to add up, to the point where no amount of money is worth it. At that point, people tend to quit in search of a better work/life balance. The Pressure Along with the long hours, youâve got the constant pressure of trying to prevail in an inherently adversarial system. Add to that the fact that lawyers are often dealing with very serious, real-life problems (involving emotional and important aspects of peoplesâ lives, such as family, money, freedom and so on) and youâve got a recipe for stress and pressure. Over time, without appropriate coping mechanisms, this pressure can become unbearable, leading lawyers to leave the profession. The Constant Arguing Some pressure is inevitable in the law, but much of it is created by the constant arguing that goes on (especially between litigators). Beyond the inherent arguing over precedent and facts in court, thereâs the daily grind of arguing over when to schedule depositions, or how many document requests each side is going to be allowed to make. Some people love this sort of thing, but many donât. If youâre not in the âI love to argue!â camp, the weight of ongoing arguments can rapidly become too much. The Lack of Control Even worse than the long hours, in many cases, is the lack of control over your work and your schedule as an attorney. When youâre subject to the whims of the court, or of the partners or other senior lawyers you work for, the lack of control can become highly frustrating. This is why many lawyers leave (or opt out of firms and other large organizations to open their own solo practices). Boredom With the Work Letâs face it, much modern legal work is pretty boring. If you went to law school with visions of giving frequently, compelling opening and closing arguments in court and executing surgical cross-examinations on a regular basis, the reality of modern law practice might come as a harsh surprise. Very few cases end up in a trial, and many so-called âlitigatorsâ have never actually tried a case. Most work takes place in writing, and much of your time will be spent alone in an office, thinking and doing research. (Or, even worse, suffering through tedious document review assignments.) The law itself, in theory, is pretty fascinating. But the day-to-day work can be a grind. (This is why the people who loved law school are often the first to exit the profession.) If youâre not sure lawâs for you, donât despair! It might be possible to find a better fit within the law, or â" worst case â" you can join the legions of other disaffected attorneys who left for greener job pastures elsewhere. At least youâll be in good company!

They thought his demeanor wasnât suited for the job. Meaning: He was too friendly.Gavel reportedly enjoyed meeting people instead of putting up a defensive front. But luckily, the pooch had a glamorous new role to fall back on - and not just any: After successfully completing âa trial as a ceremonial participantâ he became âVice-Regal Dogâ for Queenslandâs Government House earlier this year, BBC News reported. And he seems to have been lighting up peopleâs lives during tours and other events (complete with a uniform) ever since. The Facebook page for the Governor of Queensland posted photos of the dog this week.(function(d, s, id) { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) return; js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = 'https://connect.facebook.net/en_US/sdk.js#xfbml=1version=v3.1'; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs);}(document, 'script', 'facebook-jssdk'));So Gavelâs work isnât in vain - even though he wasnât a ânaturalâ talent for the police force, itâs clear that he is loved by many. The office of the Queensland governor commented in a statement to the BBC.âHe has outgrown four ceremonial coats, undergone a career change (his official title is now Gavel VRD, âVice-Regal Dogâ), and brought untold joy to the lives of the governor, Mrs de Jersey, Government House staff, and the thousands of Queenslanders who have since visited the estate,â the office of Governor Paul de Jersey told the publication. The people have also spokenTwitter users have been chiming in about Gavelâs sweet story online. This Twitter user showed tons of support this wee k.More love for the pooch all around.https://twitter.com/Sam_Winn/status/8731697955454771207 News Australia tweeted a segment of the dog in February after he started his new job. This Twitter user was lucky enough to meet Gavel last year, before he got the new gig. What to do if youâre not âa good fitâ for a positionHereâs the mindset to adopt if, like Gavel, you too arenât the candidate the employer had in mind.Remember that it really might not be youLiz Ryan wrote about this in a 2016 Forbes article. âThe trick to growing a thicker skin and sailing off confidently from a ânot a good fitâ mismatch is to keep in mind that most of what happens in a hiring decision has nothing to do with you,â Ryan wrote. Why you shouldnât stay at a job that doesnât feel right to youNozomi Morgan, a certified Executive Coach and the Founder and President of Michiki Morgan Worldwide LLC, wrote about this for HuffPost in 2016.âInstead of thriving like Iâd hoped, I lived in cons tant fear. I couldnât speak up at meetings because I wasnât sure that I was adding value to the discussion,â Morgan wrote. After feeling trapped in this job which wasnât right for her, and dealing with a âvisa situation at that timeâ (as a worker with an international background), she left the position and eventually found her âpassion.âHopefully, if you donât get the next job you were in the running for, youâll soon fare as well as Gavel the dog.

Non-Disclosure Agreement FAQ - Australia
Non-Disclosure Agreement FAQ - Australia Confidentiality/Non-Disclosure Agreement FAQ - Australia General QuestionsWhat are the differences between the various confidentiality agreements? The Potential Purchase/Transaction deals with the situation where one party is going to sell a business, part of a business, or assets and needs to disclose the financial books or other confidential information to potential purchasers. The Invention agreement protects an inventor where investors or some other person require access to confidential information in order to evaluate the invention. The Employee/Contractor agreement protects an Employer where a contractor or employee has access to confidential information belonging to the Employer. The Other Purpose agreement deals with any other general situation where one party will be providing confidential information and wants to be protected. Why have a written contract?Written confidentiality agreements provide documentation or evidence of the receiving party's understanding of the confidential nature of the information received. The receiving party's obligation to maintain the confidentiality of the confidential information is clearly expressed. A written contract allows the disclosing party to define crucial terms and more effectively control the way the information is used. Having the contract in writing is proof of what was agreed to and may help prevent misunderstandings later on. Why am I asked to specify a location or jurisdiction? Each State or Province/Territory may have its own set of laws. The selection you make is used to customize the document to your specific jurisdiction. How long should I make the duties and obligations of confidentiality last following the termination of the agreement? It is important to stipulate a term long enough to protect the interests of the disclosing party, while not unnecessarily burdening the receiving party. The length of time you should use depends on the nature of the confidential information and the nature of your particular circumstances. Remember that if you select a time period that is too long or too restrictive, a court may find the clause unenforceable. What is the purpose of the non-competition clause?A non-compete clause restricts the receiving party from starting a competing company or disclosing confidential information to competitors. Its important to note that it cannot prevent people from working for competitors. How long should I prevent the party receiving the information from competing? It is important to prevent competition long enough to protect the interests of the disclosing party, while not unnecessarily burdening the receiving party. The length of time you should use depends on the nature of the confidential information and the nature of your particular circumstances. Remember that if you select a time period that is too long or too restrictive, a court may find the clause unenforceable. What is the purpose of the non-solicitation clause? This clause prevents the receiving party from recruiting any of your employees to work for them. In other words, this restriction prevents the receiving party from raiding your work force. How long should I make the non-solicitation clause last for?It is important to prevent solicitation of employees for a term long enough to protect the interests of the disclosing party, while not unnecessarily burdening the receiving party. In addition, you cannot unfairly restrict the employment of individual employees. The length of time you should use depends on the nature of the confidential information and the nature of your particular circumstances. Remember that if you select a time period that is too long or too restrictive, a court may find the clause unenforceable. What is an injunction? An injunction is a court order preventing a party from actually disclosing the confidential information. This remedy is often more beneficial than monetary damages because money alone may not fully offset the damage done by an unauthorized disclosure. It also avoids the difficulty of trying to measure all the damage caused by an unauthorized disclosure. What is meant by reasonable steps necessary to retrieve lost or improperly disclosed information? This means that the receiving party will take action that would be considered normal by a reasonable person in the same circumstances. What additional clauses could I add? While the Confidentiality Agreement that Law Depot provides is very comprehensive and provides sound protection, this option is available to allow you to further tailor the contract to your specific needs. What information would be classified as confidential?Confidential information would include all information that is provided by the Seller to the Purchaser that is not common knowledge or already in the public domain. This will NOT include the following: Information that is already known in the industry; Information that becomes publicly known through no fault of the Purchaser; Information rightfully in the possession of the Purchaser before being received from the Seller; Information created by the Purchaser through the Purchaser's own independent research. Information obtained in this way must be acquired without the direct or indirect use of confidential information already received from the Seller. This may include information developed from publicly available or industry sources; Information obtained from a third party pertaining to the Seller's business where the third party may rightfully disclose the information. This may include information rightfully disclosed by a government agency or industry journal. Potential Purchase TransactionHow should I describe the name of the item to be purchased? When describing the name of the item to be purchased, it is important to indicate the specific purpose that the Purchaser can use the confidential information for. If you want the confidential information to be used for a specific purpose, use specific wording. If you want to allow flexibility in the purpose that the confidential information is used for, then use more general wording. Describe the item with enough detail so as to clearly identify the item without including any of the confidential information regarding that item. When can consent be withheld? If the transaction that is the subject of this agreement is not completed, but confidential information was shared in the process, you may withhold your consent that would otherwise allow the Purchaser to be involved in a business that is in direct competition with your business. This wording prevents the Purchaser from using the confidential information to your disadvantage. InventionWhy is there no space to describe the invention in the contract? The description of the invention is intentionally not mentioned in the contract to ensure that the contract is signed and the obligation of confidentiality is imposed on the Evaluator before any information about the invention is disclosed. Sometimes the mere description of the invention would allow someone else to steal your idea. Employee/Independent ContractorHow should I describe the position/responsibility of the Employee? This description is important because it defines the purpose that the Employee will be able to use the confidential information for. If you want the confidential information used for a specific purpose use specific wording. If you want to allow flexibility in the purpose that the confidential information is used for use more general wording. What is a bona-fide independent party?A bona-fide independent party is a party that is not associated or affiliated with the Employee nor does the employee own or control that party in any way. What does not unreasonably withhold consent mean in the non-competition clause? This wording means that the Employer will not withhold its consent for an unjust, irrational or unreasonable reason. When can consent be reasonably withheld?Ultimately, this is a question that is decided by the courts. You would need to have a just and rationale reason for withholding your consent. This may include situations where you have a legitimate proprietary interest and by giving consent your interest would be compromised. Other PurposeHow should I describe the purpose for entering into the Confidentiality Agreement? You should include a description of why you are disclosing the confidential information to the Recipient without disclosing details of the confidential information itself. This description is important because it defines the purpose that the Recipient can use the confidential information for. If you want the confidential information to be used for a very specific purpose then be specific in your wording. If you want to allow flexibility in the purpose that the confidential information is used for then use more general wording. When can consent be reasonably withheld?Ultimately, this is a question that is decided by the courts. You would need to have a just and rationale reason for withholding your consent. If the transaction contemplated by the agreement is not completed, but confidential information was shared in the process, you may be able to reasonably withhold your consent and prevent the Recipient from being involved in a business that is in direct competition with your business. This wording prevents the Recipient from using the confidential information to your disadvantage. After the Confidentiality Agreement is signedWhat else should I consider in protecting my proprietary information?A Confidentiality Agreement by itself may not be enough if you are careless with your proprietary information. Other actions you should consider that will help a court conclude that you are diligent in protecting your proprietary information include: Confidential documents should be kept in a secure location with limited access. Staff and work associates of the receiving party that have access to your confidential information should also sign confidentiality agreements. Vendors that have access to your confidential information should also sign confidentiality agreements. Documents should be marked CONFIDENTIAL or marked with other words that show the proprietary nature of the documents.

5 Outdated Career Tips You Should Ignore - The Muse
5 Outdated Career Tips You Should Ignore - The Muse 5 Outdated Career Tips You Should Ignore It occurred to me the other day as I bit into a homemade cookie from my co-worker how far weâve come. I remember the days when baking for a colleagueâs birthday or bringing in a batch of no-occasion brownies was considered poor practice because it suggested (for women, especially) that you had time on your hands. Instead of working more hours or thinking creatively in your spare time, you were wrist-deep in pie crust, giving people reason to view you not as a professional person, but a merely domestic one- or at the very least, an unambitious one. Iâm so glad that notion has flown the coop. It got me thinking, however, what other career advice is totally outdated? What arcane suggestions could we discard? I can think of at least five off the top of my head: 1. Keep Your Personal Life Private Go ahead and make small talk with your boss, but be careful not to actually divulge any personal details of your life. No need to get into what you did over the weekend or the vacation youâre planning. All your manager needs to know is when you need off and that your weekend was âgood.â What antiquated advice. Youâre a whole human, your supervisor is a whole human, and as such, you both have lives beyond the work that you do. Why contain yourself when sharing some details about your personal life may actually be a good thing? 2. Pretend You Donât Need Any Help Fake it âtil you make when you donât know how to do something on the job, right? Just pretend to know or you waste more time than necessary figuring it out. No longer. Eschew this advice and remember that thereâs a lot of learning to be done when you seek assistance from your co-workers or admit to your manager that youâre confused about an assignment. Unless sheâs a really awful, short-tempered, impatient person who, frankly, has no business leading a team, your supervisor will likely welcome questions and be happy to offer input if itâll help you produce a quality project. 3. Avoid Interacting on Social Media Donât friend your boss on Facebook and donât follow him on Instagram. LinkedIn is safe and professional, and Twitter is fine too, assuming you only use yours for work purposes, but donât cross over into the personal aspect of the various social sites. Once upon a time this was respected advice. This was around the time when you uttered one-word responses about your holiday break or your sisterâs visit over the long weekend. But now? As long as youâre not displaying anything wildly inappropriate on your platforms or talking crap about your manager, the company, the CEO, itâs pretty natural to befriend, follow, like, comment on colleaguesâ social media pages. It goes back to that bit about everyone being a whole human. 4. Maintain a Separate Work-Life Balance The workday ends at 6 PM, and begins again at 9 AM the next morning. In your non-working hours, you avoid email and you also quash any cool, creative ideas that cross your mind. And while youâre in the office, you pretend like your friends and family donât exist, and you have a one-track brain: work. In theory, I can understand where this dichotomy emerged, but in real life, it just doesnât make sense. I get a thrill when I find myself inspired by an idea while Iâm walking the dog first thing in the morning. I whip my phone out and jot down a note so I donât risk forgetting when I cajole my brain into remembering it only once Iâve made it to my desk. Iâm also not going to ignore my partnerâs email about the dinner party weâre planning just because Iâm on the clock. Rigidly drawing a line between work and life, which are so obviously connected, is only going to make things difficult. 5. Never Challenge Authority What your boss says goes. Heâs in charge, and whatever youâre instructed to do, you do it blindly. He knows more than you, thereâs a reason heâs in his position, and youâre in yours. Itâs not hard to see why this advice stuck around for so long. In fact, of all the items on the list, this may be the one you continue to struggle with. And yet, if you view respectful pushback as playing into the greater good of the organization, you should be at least halfway over the hurdle of speaking up about your convictions. Your manager, if heâs a good one, who cares about your growth and the success of the company, actually wants you to exercise your speak up. As is the case with a lot of well-intentioned advice passed through the decades, itâs essential to consider some old-school career advice with a skeptical eye. Some of it, you may find, still applies to you, while other bits, youâll gleefully toss aside in favor of less archaic professional advice. Retaining Your Valuable Human Capital
Retaining Your Valuable Human Capital Retaining Your Valuable Human Capital It is essential to give your employees a vested interest in the success of your business. In many companies today, employees feel unimportant, and that they have nothing to gain from the success of the firm. That's why bonuses, ESOP plans, and other incentives should be a part of every business. When individuals have tangible reasons to work harder, they are more likely to share your enthusiasm and desire for the company to succeed. It is amazing how much effort, initiative, and intensity people are willing to provide when they have a stake in the outcome.Be nice!Employees should have other incentives besides money to work hard and give back to the business; your employees should enjoy what they're doing. Create a friendly and caring atmosphere at work with special benefits for your employees. Sometimes a little perk can create an incredible atmosphere of warmth and friendliness. Whether you try casual days, birthday cakes, family days, pet days, surprise bonuses, pizza partie s, or special days off, do something different at work to make your employees feel like they are part of a company that cares about them. An atmosphere of caring isn't confined just to internal perks. Sponsor local community events, send employees back for continuing education, recognize the families of your employees. These extra touches will create a positive working atmosphere that will have you and the rest of your team looking forward to coming to work every day.Important employee responsibilitiesAn important part of managing your business is giving responsibility to other individuals at your company. Giving employees significant responsibility not only makes them feel important, but also frees up time so you can focus on growing your business. It can be very difficult to let go of certain tasks that you have performed from Day One. However, being a manager means delegating responsibility in the most efficient manner, allowing you to spend time on the core areas of the bus iness. Releasing the operational and financial aspects of the business will allow you to focus on future initiatives and other opportunities in the marketplace.Using employees efficientlyUtilize your employees to the best of their abilities. Push employees to expand their horizons and learn about different aspects of the company. Encourage them to choose goals that will advance their professional abilities and make a significant impact on the company. Reward your employees for doing well, providing an idea for a project, or working longer hours to finish particular projects. Recognizing the efforts of your employees is an important part of creating a strong bond of respect and communication.A transparent organization~Always keep the lines of communication open and encourage employees to come up with new ideas and suggestions, even on topics not directly related to what they are doing. Keep your employees in the loop. In many growing companies, employees often feel like they'r e in the dark about important company business - a feeling that can breed mistrust and discontentment, and may even drive individuals to leave the company. Keep your employees feeling like they are an integral part of the team by actively communicating with them, encouraging them to take their skills to the next level, giving them important responsibilities within the business, and letting them know they are important to the company and you personally.Incentives and benefitsThere are many different types of incentive and benefits packages that you can make available to your employees. Unless you have part-time employees, your staff will want a medical benefits plan. Offering a comprehensive medical benefits package is extremely helpful when hiring skilled workers. Offering a tuition reimbursement program will encourage employees to increase their knowledge with continuing education classes and advanced degrees. Encouraging your employees to take financial or computer literacy c lasses will add value to your company. Stock options can be especially helpful when trying to hire an individual whose current salary you may not be able to match. The future value of the stock options may be enough to interest them into coming aboard. Bonus plans are another excellent way to reward employees for their good work. Make sure to explain to employees the basis for their bonus. It is a good idea to tie bonuses to personal as well as company performances.Concept:TeamBuilding a business team that works well together is an essential part of the success of any group. Finding the personalities and skill sets that fit is an important part of the hiring process. Creating an invigorating atmosphere, encouraging people to work together, and providing strong leadership and guidance are all essential parts of building a winning team.

How to save yourself from drowning in emails
How to save yourself from drowning in emails How to save yourself from drowning in emails Stop using email as a chat service and ask friends and colleagues to only email important matters. These are just two of the tips offered by a University of Brighton expert who wants to save us from drowning in emails.Paul Levy, Senior Lecturer in the Universityâs Brighton Business School, estimtes we spend nearly five and a half hours each weekday checking emails. And the numbers sent each day will have grown to 246 billion in 2019, up from 205 billion in 2015.In an article in The Conversation, Paul said we are constantly checking emails to keep ahead and to try and âempty the bucketâ. One controversial tip is: Follow the increasing number of organisations who have given up emails altogether.Hereâs his ten ways to âfinally gain control over your chaotic inboxâ:1. Stop using email as a surrogate chat serviceEmail is not really designed for quickfire conversation. Itâs time consuming to wade through threaded, elongated conversations which clutter inboxes. Use alternative, better suited methods. And, ideally, resolve things face-to-face or phone in the first place.2. Beware of repeat messagingThis is known as the problem of âmessage replicationâ. A text message arrives: âIâm just checking you got my emailâ. The phone rings: âIâve just sent you an emailâ.Many people still donât trust decisions agreed virtually. A lot of decisions by messaging and emailing are not fully believed and we end up with a hierarchy of message replication. Texts to confirm social media messages, emails to confirm texts, phone calls to confirm emails, and face-to-face meetings to confirm phone calls. This overlap is very time consuming and potentially confusing. Email is not a great place for formal decision making. The meeting room where we meet as real human beings is still the most influential place for many people.3. Weed your email gardenA cluttered inbox is like a garden overgrown with weeds. It pays in the long run to spend a bit of regular time removin g cluttering messages. One simple and effective tip is to use the search function and to search for the term âunsubscribeâ. This will throw up a surprisingly high number of newsletters you have no memory of even subscribing to.Even post-GDPR, you may well find literally hundreds of unwanted emails. Go through each one and unsubscribe. It will be a case of short-term pain for long-term gain.Your inbox is like a garden. Tend to it.4. Use the spam folder wiselyAutomatic identification of spam emails has got better in recent years. But they still creep into our inboxes. This is another easy way of email weeding. It is worth the time to educate your spam folder to become even better by placing those suspect mails into it. Also look in your spam folder to remove any legitimate emails that have been placed there unnecessarily.5. Ask friends and colleagues to stop emailing youDonât be shy. Perhaps be tactful. Another cause of email overload is unwanted emails from those closest to you. Be prepared to politely ask other people to stop sending you emails that would be better shared in a meeting, on the phone or as a text message.6. Keep your requests simpleDonât send over-complicated emails. If you ask for five things, a lot of people only reply properly to the last thing on your list. This simply generates further emails seeking the other four items.7. Ensure your replies are comprehensiveReply to everything in an email you receive. Not doing so just creates further emails seeking out what you havenât replied to.8. Only check your email at set timesThere is increasing evidence that we are more productive (and less stressed) if we check and respond to emails just a few times a day. It is a myth that we have to be in touch minute by minute. And, if you must do that, email isnât the best method. Use a form of instant messaging.9. Replicate your subject heading within the email bodyYou might think that writing something twice is a waste of effort. Not so with em ail. Write exactly what your email is seeking as a short summary (15 words maximum) in your email subject line and then end your email with the same sentence. Saying it clearly and twice increases the likelihood of getting a full and proper reply, as well as requests getting properly answered to.10. Give up email altogetherThe number of examples of people and organizations who have stopped using email altogether and used other communication methods, continues to rise (though how this will play out in the long run remains to be seen). Yet giving email up can make you less stressed and more productive. Other communication methods are often more fluid. It really is possible. Try it for a week.Give some, or all of these tips a try. Sometimes those things we most take for granted are the very things that cause us greatest problems. This post was originally published on YourCoffeeBreak.co.uk.
